Zirakpur, January 21

Residents of Mohali, Kharar, Zirakpur, Lalru, Banur, Dera Bassi and Nayagaon began celebrations on the eve of the consecration of Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

In Kharar, 501 women, clad in saffron sarees brought from Ayodhya, took out a Kalash Yatra. They gathered at Ajj Sarovar, said to be named after Lord Ram’s grandfather Maharaja Ajj who built a temple and a pond in its vicinity. Residents lit 51,000 earthen lamps. Devotees lit up the sky with fireworks and laser show in the evening. ‘Prabhat pheri’, Sundarkand and shobha yatra were organised.

According to residents, the 13-acre sarovar is said to have mythological significance. A 108 yagya congregation and a community feast, ‘langar’, will be organised in Kharar tomorrow.

In Kurali, enthusiastic devotees, including elderly women, carried out a procession. Camels and elephants were part of the procession. Youngsters astride bike, jeeps, tractors and cars sang and danced on the occasion.

Dera Bassi former MLA NK Sharma also attended the event and congratulated the devotees on the holy day. A car rally was held in Mohali as part of celebrations.
