BERLIN, November 18

The German police unleashed water cannon and pepper spray to scatter thousands of protesters angry about Chancellor Angela Merkel's plans to set a legal framework for enforcing Covid restrictions.

Protesters near Berlin's landmark Brandenburg Gate threw bottles at the police and set off smoke bombs, witnesses reported. The riot police detained some protesters while firing volleys of water and urging crowds by loudspeaker to disperse. The police detained 190 persons and nine officers were injured. — Reuters
