Woman booked for duping husband of Rs 20L

After calling him to Canada, she left him citing ‘extramarital affair’

The police have booked a woman for duping her husband of Rs20 lakh, the money spent by the latter’s family to send her to Canada on a student visa. The suspect has been identified as Sumanpreet Kaur Brar of Dunewala village in Phul.

Complainant Gurpreet Singh of Bhagta Bhaika said he wanted to go to Canada and his family members saw a matrimonial advertisement in a newspaper in which it was stated that the girl, who has the required bands in IELTS, wanted a groom. Thereafter, his family members contacted the parents of the girl.

Later, the marriage was fixed and it was decided that Sumanpreet would take him to Canada after the marriage. Besides, his family members would bear the total cost of Rs20 lakh, including fee of her studies, he added.

Gurpreet said he got married in 2018 and after sometime, her wife went to Canada. A few months after their marriage, her wife sent an enrollment letter to him, on the basis of which he also went to Canada.

“When I reached Canada, my wife Sumanpreet told me that she is in a relationship with Chiraju Gupta, who belongs to Lehragaga, and putting up in Canada. She told me that she wished to stay with Chiraju and she just wanted to come to Canada with my help. They also asked me to return to India and threatened to eliminate me,” he added.

Thereafter, he returned to India, the complainant said. According to him, Sumanpreet had duped him of Rs20 lakh had in a well-planned conspiracy. On his complainant, a case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered against the suspect.

Requirements for spouse visa

  • For a spouse visa, an immigration expert said the couple first needs to get its marriage registered in a court. Thereafter, they have to get married in a gurdwara as per rituals in the presence of family members and friends. Later, they need to present pictures of the wedding and the marriage certificate while applying for a spouse visa.
  • After reaching Canada, he or she can call his or her partner within three to six months no matter what the qualification level or IELTS bands are.
