London, September 25

Thomas Tuchel admitted his Chelsea side were not good enough in a 1-0 home Premier League defeat to champions Manchester City today which ended Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season.

Chelsea set up to frustrate City but offered little other than defensive solidity until Gabriel Jesus broke the deadlock with a shot on the turn in the 53rd minute.

City, who had lost all their meetings with Chelsea since Tuchel took charge in January, including the Champions League final, would have won by more but for home keeper Edouard Mendy.

“We lost the game and City deserved to win. Until the goal we were very strong in the last 20 metres of the field, but only there unfortunately,” Tuchel told reporters.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes blasted a stoppage-time penalty over the crossbar as Aston Villa earned a shock 1-0 victory at a below-par Manchester United.

Atletico rocked

Vitora: Atletico Madrid’s Spanish title defence was dealt a blow as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at lowly Alaves in La Liga today.

Centre-back Victor Laguardia’s fourth-minute header from a Ruben Duarte corner was enough for the hosts.

Lewa gives scoring a break

Berlin: Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski’s club-record scoring streak for ended at 19 consecutive games on Friday when he failed to get a goal in his team’s 3-1 win at last-placed Greuther Furth in the Bundesliga. — Agencies
