Detroit (US), July 3

Returning to competitive golf after four months, India’s Arjun Atwal opened his campaign at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with a 2-under 70 in the first round.

Atwal was tied-68th, five shots behind the leaders, Doc Redman, Scott Stallings and Kevin Kisner. Six players carded 66s on Thursday.

Sure I missed some small ones, but also made a few long putts. I guess a bit of rust. But I will take this considering how long I have not played — Arjun Atwal

Atwal had birdies on the 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th and 15th holes, and bogeys on the 2nd, 11th and 18th holes.

“I had a great hole-out from a bunker almost 40 feet away for a birdie on par-3 15th. That was pretty special as I couldn’t see the green or see the ball go in,” said Atwal.
