Troon (Scotland), August 20

Indian golfers endured a rough time in the first round of the Women’s British Open as difficult conditions at the Royal Troon Golf Club made it difficult for the players to break par.

Aditi Ashok carded a 7-over 78 at the par-71 course as she failed to make a single birdie in her round, ending up with five bogeys and a double-bogey. Gurugram girl Tvesa Malik was one stroke behind Aditi with a 79 that included three double-bogeys, three bogeys and a lone birdie at the links course. The third Indian in the field, Diksha Dagar of Haryana, started in the afternoon and shot an 8-over with nine bogeys, one double-bogey, one birdie and an exceptional eagle on the par-4 18th.

Only four golfers had sub-par scores, with American Amy Olson leading at 4-under. Though several players were yet to finish their rounds, the positions of Aditi (Tied-108), Tvesa and Diksha (both Tied-125) in a field of 144 mean that they would have to play exceptionally well in the second round to make the cut in the year’s first Major. — PTI
