Junior women’s hockey team beats Ireland 4-1

The Indian junior women’s hockey team started its Uniphar U-23 5 Nations Tournament with a comprehensive 4-1 win over hosts Ireland. Annu (12th), Deepika Soreng (25th), Monika Dipi Toppo (45th) and Beauty Dungdung (47) netted one goal each for India while Mikayla Power (19’) scored the solitary goal for Ireland.

Flawless Anahat storms to U-15 Asian squash title

Promising Indian player Anahat Singh won the gold medal in the girls’ under-15 category at the Asian Junior Squash Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. The 14-year-old Anahat defeated Kwong Ena of Hong Kong 3-0 in the final. She won the title without dropping a single game in the tournament. She had defeated Malaysian top seed Whitney Isabelle Wilson 3-0 in the semifinals.

Tvesa 56th as Bronte holes 55-foot eagle to win title

Tvesa Malik rounded off a week to forget with a second straight 5-over 78 to finish tied-56th in the individual section of the Aramco Team Series. She finished at 11-under. Bronte Law holed a monster putt from 55 feet on the final hole to win the title by one stroke.

Fraser-Pryce equals own season’s best to win 100m

Three-time Olympics gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce equalled her world-leading time of the year in winning the 100 metres in 10.67 seconds at the Diamond League meet here. Halle: Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz showed his Wimbledon credentials today, hammering world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev 6-1 6-4 to win the ATP 500 grasscourt tournament here. World No. 12 Hurkacz defeated Medvedev and Roger Federer en route to the semifinals at Wimbledon last year and showed he will once again be a force to reckon with when the Championships kick off on June 27. Birmingham: Beatriz Haddad Maia claimed a second WTA title in two weeks as Shuai Zhang retired injured in the final at the Rothesay Classic. After rain washed out yesterday’s semifinals both players had to play twice in a day with Haddad Maia beating Simona Halep and Zhang edging out Sorana Cirstea. Meanwhile, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur won her second grasscourt title after Belinda Bencic retired injured in the final of the Berlin Open.

West Indies beat Bangladesh in first Test

North Sound: John Campbell smashed the winning six as West Indies beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in the first Test today. West Indies finished on 88/3 after resuming the fourth day on 49/3 in their second innings. Out-of-form Bangladesh had given the hosts a scare yesterday, at one stage reducing West Indies to 9/3. Colombo: Pathum Nissanka cracked a brilliant 137 while Kusal Mendis scored a half-century before getting injured as Sri Lanka beat Australia by six wickets in the ODI to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Chasing 292 to win, Nissanka and Mendis combined for a brilliant 170-run partnership for the second wicket to put their side in complete control.

Huske, Dressel power to butterfly golds

Budapest: American Torri Huske narrowly missed out on a world record in the women’s 100m butterfly at the swimming World Championships while her compatriot and seven-time Olympics champion Caeleb Dressel won the 50m butterfly. Huske was ahead of the world record time in the final 50m but eventually finished with a time of 55.64 seconds — just 0.16 seconds shy.
