Security beefed up in city ahead of Republic Day

Security has been stepped up in the city ahead of Republic Day and the police have intensified checking at the bus stand and other public places in the city. Vehicles, especially from other states, are also being checked.

DSP (City) Gurjit Singh Romana along with a police team and women police personnel stepped up vigil at bus stand on Monday. Hotels were closely examined and no person was allowed to stay there without identity proof.

Talking about security checks in the city, Romana said: “As Republic Day draws near, we are carrying out routine security checks in the city. Police teams have been deployed in the city, which are keeping a tab at public places and at entry and exit points of the city.”

Besides, SHO-level officers had been told to intensify patrolling and night vigil in their areas and keep a check on the movement of traffic at various points in the city. The DSP also appealed residents to immediately inform the police if they find anything suspicious.

He also stated that the city police had been keeping a strict vigil over the law and order situation in the city. Checking points had been set up to keep an eye on anti-national elements and suspicious activities.

Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu will be the chief guest in the district-level function to be organised at Multipurpose Sports Stadium in the city on Sunday. Around 1,800 students from various schools would participate in cultural items during the celebrations. Students from various schools would present PT show, gymnastics, cultural performances and choreography on patriotic songs.
