New Delhi, June 24

The Supreme Court on Thursday asked all state education boards that have cancelled Class XII exams to notify their respective scheme for the evaluation of students in 10 days and declare the results by July 31.

A Bench, led by Justice AM Khanwilkar, said it was impossible to have a uniform evaluation scheme for all state boards across India.

With regard to petitions seeking cancellation of Class XII examinations by state boards, the Bench said it would take up the issue on Friday at 2 pm.

The State Board of Andhra Pradesh said it wanted to conduct the Class XII examinations.

But the top court wasn't impressed as it raised questions about the safety of over five lakh students.

"Unless we are convinced that you are prepared to conduct the exam without any fatality, till then we will not allow it. When others have cancelled you can't hold it to show you are different..." it said posting the matter for further hearing on Friday.

The Haryana Government counsel said state boards should be given the freedom to formulate their own assessment schemes.
