It has been 50 years since Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai and almost four decades since Chann Pardesi made history for Punjabi cinema, Pollywood now. Both National Award-winning films have been the reference point for the industry ever since; both when it wasn’t doing well and now that it is. So when a session at a recently concluded literature festival was dedicated to the revival of Chann Pardesi, it straightaway put the spotlight not just on two remakes in specific (Chann Pardesi and Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai), but several other Pollywood projects in the pipeline.

As for Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai, while the cult classic starred the inimitable Prithiviraj Kapoor, Som Ditti and Vimmi, among others, this one will be starring Yuvraj Hans, Vindu Dara Singh, Mukesh Rishi and Sardar Sohi, among others. The producers Maann Singh Deep and Kalyani Singh have already given a go-ahead to the project.

Second take

Sequels, especially of any hit franchise, are here to stay in Punjabi cinema. So when Yaar Anmulle Returns, after the hit movie of 2011, one expects a lot. The film, which set the trend of ‘buddy films’ in Punjabi cinema, retains two of the principal cast members — Yuvraj Hans and Harish Verma. While Prabh Gill replaces Arya Babbar in this one; the audience expects a similar trip down student and hostel life from this one too. “Expect a riot,” is all Yuvraj Hans has to say for now, with the movie currently in the shooting stage.

Romantic note

Talk of sequels and the entire cast of Chal Mera Putt 2, starring Amrinder Gill, is currently in London, completing the initial leg of the shooting. In Pollywood, any search for the most-waited projects, be it single tracks or films, starts with the two ‘stars’ — Diljit Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal.

Ammy Virk too has joined the club, a bit late but with a bang! Virk’s film Sufna is slated to release on Valentine’s Day in 2020; it will be the seventh collaboration between him and writer-director Jagdeep Sidhu.

A musical and a love story, Ammy Virk has so far described the project using a few lines from Bulleh Shah’s epic, “Zehar wekh ke peeta te ki peeta, Ishq soch ke keeta te ki keeta, Dil de ke dil lain di ass rakhi ve Bulleya, Pyaar wi laalach naal keeta te ki keeta.” That should get all the fans of romantic genre geared up.

Fun & frolic

Moving on, there’s Gippy Grewal’s Posti, which will take us back to the Punjab heartland and farms, and, hopefully, put the much-needed spotlight on the problems being faced as well. In the meanwhile, Diljit Dosanjh, after being part of Shada, of course, and much speculation about his marital status off screen, forms a Jodi — the title of his next film, also starring Punjabi singer Nimrat Khaira! Touted for a June release, the news should make Diljit fans happy considering his Udta Punjab was also released in June. That’s Good Newwz… another of Diljit’s upcoming projects, but in Bollywood! And that’s for another day.
