Pvt security guard thrashed at jail’s de-addiction centre

A security employee of a private firm deputed at the de-addiction centre in the Central Jail was beaten up by three prisoners here on Thursday. The victim has been identified as Sharanjit Singh. The inmates have been identified as Jaswinder Singh of Bathinda, Gurpyar Singh and Gurwinder Singh, both residents of Sangrur.

Sharanjit told the police that the incident took place when the three inmates were standing in a queue for taking medicine from the de-addiction centre. He said, “Suddenly, the inmates came out of the queue and at the same time, other jail inmates objected to it. When I asked them to stand in the queue, they scuffled with me. They also torn my uniform and tossed my turban. Other jail staff members came to my rescue.”

According to the police, Jaswinder has been serving a seven-year sentence while Gurwinder was convicted in an NDPS case. Gurpyar was shifted from the Patiala Central Jail around a year ago. Several cases of robbery have been registered against him.

A case under Sections 353, 186, 323 and 506 of the IPC and Section 52 of the Prisons Act has been registered against them.

Cellphone recovered from prisoner

The Central Jail authorities recovered a mobile phone from a prisoner, identified as Harwinder Singh of Batala. A probe has been initiated to ascertain how he managed to get the cell phone inside the high-security jail.
