Two cops booked on corruption charge in Tarn Taran

A Punjab Police Inspector posted at the local police lines and his subordinate head constable Devinder Singh, who let off two drug smugglers by taking a huge amount of money as bribe, were booked in a corruption case by the local city police.

The head constable had been arrested. The police said the accused had been identified as Inspector Baljit Singh, head constable Devinder Singh, Jasbir Singh, Malkit Singh Palta and Baoo Singh.

The police said Baljit Singh and Devinder Singh had seized 1 kg of heroin from Malkit Singh and Baoo Singh on March 31. Jasbir Singh of Guruwali intervened in the matter. He called the Inspector at his residence and gave him a bribe of Rs 35 lakh to let off the accused.

The police officer neither seized the consignment nor booked them under the NDPS Act.

He returned the recovered consignment of heroin to be sold anywhere. The matter came into the notice of higher police officials, including the SSP.

SSP Dhruman H Nimbale asked Kuljinder Singh, DSP, Patti, to conduct an inquiry. The DSP collected relevant facts related to the case. On the basis of the information gathered, the accused were booked under Sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act, Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act -1988 and Section 120-B of the IPC by the local city police.

The DSP said the accused except for head constable Devinder Singh were absconding.

Inspector Baljit Singh was recruited in the police department in 1996 as an ASI and his next promotion was due any time.
