Sangrur, July 25

Thousands of pensioners in Sangrur district have not received their pension for the month of June as authorities have failed to rectify a technical snag in their system. Harassed pensioners are taking repeated rounds of various offices for solution to their problem.

Sources said earlier, like other districts, in Sangrur also pension was being paid through banking system. But in September 2020, the state government started paying pension in Sangrur through the Punjab Financial Management System (PFMS) to prevent payment to fake pensioners. But the PFMS is delaying the disbursement of pension.

“Monthly Rs 1,500 is the sole source of my livelihood as I am 100 per cent disabled. But neither any AAP leaders nor officers concerned are giving any reply and only saying that they are trying to rectify a fault in the system,” said a local.

Another old-age pensioner Kulwant Singh, who came third time to enquire about his pension, said if authorities do not know how long it would take, they must save us from more harassment.

“I have come from Sunam and for an old person like me, its tough to come here while their officers do not attend our repeated calls,” he alleged.

In Sangrur, there are total 2,02,979 pensioners of various categories. District Social Security officer Dr Lavleen Warring confirmed that June pension had got delayed due to technical problems in the PFMS. “We have started disbursing pension through banking system. In coming some days, all will get their pension,” she said.
