Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner Idu Sharif dies in abject poverty

Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner and sufi singer Idu Sharif died in abject poverty in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

Awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2006, Sharif was from Patiala’s Laloda and, claimed to be a descendant of the Bhai Mardana lineage of musicians.

He suffered paralytic stroke in 2011, followed by three more strokes in quick succession. His illness ate into his savings, his wife was quoted as saying in The Tribune on February 15, 2018.
