The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) today called on farmers all across the state to hold protests at all district headquarters and submit memoranda to district authorities against the Agnipath scheme on August 16.

Prior to it, farmers’ bodies will hold conventions in all districts from August 7 to 14 to mobilise more and more farmers for the state-wide protest.

SKM leaders claimed that at least 10,000 farmers were expected to take part in the dharna

This decision was taken at the state body meeting of the SKM held here today under the presidentship of Dr Darshan Pal, state president of Krantikari Kisan Union.

The speakers also exhorted the farmers to participate in large numbers in the 75-hour dharna at Lakhimpur Kheri from August 18 to 20. The SKM leaders claimed that at least 10,000 farmers were expected to take part in the dharna.

Bharti Kisan Union-Lakhowal general secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal said the issue of agricultural debts was discussed in detail in the meeting. The SKM said this matter would be listed in the memoranda to be submitted to the government for total remission of all debts.

“The state government ought to put a kisan pension scheme in place for grant of pension equal to Class IV government employees to all men and women involved in farming. At the same time, crop insurance scheme be introduced with an acre of cultivated land as a unit,” demanded those present at the meeting.

In addition to Krantikari Kisan Union and BKU-Lakhowal, functionaries of Kisan Sangharsh Committee, Kirti Kisan Union, Kul Hind Kisan Sabha, BKU (Dakaunda), Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, Punjab Kisan Union, BKU-Kadian, BKU-Doaba, Majha Kisan Sangharsh Committee, Doaba Kisan Committee, Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee, Doaba Kisan Union, Kaumi Kisan Union, Kirti Kisan Morcha and BKU-Malwa attended the meeting.
