Moga, June 22

Paddy transplantation in Ferozepur, Faridkot, Moga, Muktsar, Bathinda and Mansa districts of Malwa belt is in full swing due to the recent rain.

In the past 24 hours, Patiala received 1.1 mm of rainfall, Bathinda 15.6 mm, Faridkot 58.4 mm, Barnala 1.5 mm, Fatehgarh Sahib 6.5 mm, Ferozepur 45.5 mm, Samrala (Ludhiana) 3.5 mm, Budhsinghwala (Moga) 16.5 mm, Mohali 1.5 mm, Muktsar 20 mm and Ropar 4 mm rainfall.

Though there’s shortage of labourers due to cancellation of trains amid agitation over recruitment of “Agnipath” scheme, farmers and local manpower have pulled-up their socks to take advantage of showers.

Mansa and some parts of Bathinda and Fazilka districts did not received adequate rain, but the rest of Malwa belt has received normal and above normal showers, which the agro-experts say would be good for paddy.

Sangrur, Barnala, Malerkotla, Ludhiana, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib where transplantation had begun on June 18 also witnessed good rain.

Gurmej Singh Sidhu of Chak Bhange Wala village said cancellation and diversion of trains has affected manpower from other states. “Paddy transplantation has just begun. We hope that the Indian Railways will resume operations,” he said.
