Jalandhar, July 17

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today appealed to people to plant five trees on getting a new electricity connection.

Urging people to start a campaign to save trees, Mann, during his visit to Sultanpur Lodhi, on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the kar sewa of Kali Bein, said there was need for reviving the state’s erstwhile green cover. He said the state government would provide the required money for the purpose.

Mann drank a glass of water from the Kali Bein, checked the total dissolved solids (TDS) level of the water and also planted a sapling on its banks. Mann’s visit came within a fortnight of the Kali Bein throwing up dead fish after aquatic life was choked due to lack of release of adequate water into it.

He invoked Guru Nanak Dev several times, saying that “if we aren’t able to save even the rivers and rivulets touched by the Guru Nanak Dev’s feet, then there are a lakh curses on us. What will we do with such a chair (power)”.

Mann blamed the previous governments for not doing their bit to save the environment of the state.
