Chandigarh, January 17

Political parties have welcomed the EC’s decision to postpone the Assembly elections from February 14 to February 20 in view of the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas.

Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said: “It was unprecedented that the ECI after announcing the elections schedule has changed the dates. I have written a thanksgiving letter to the ECI on behalf of the state government and people of Punjab.”

PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu also welcomed decision. AAP state president Bhagwant Mann said the change in polling date was necessary out of the respect for the sentiments of the people of Punjab and to protect their right to vote in the upcoming elections. The SAD too welcomed the move. “The EC has accepted the demand of the public. It is an admirable decision,” it said. —
