With the surging number of Covid patients and increasing death toll at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH) here, the college authorities on Friday decided to shift patients who are no longer in a critical condition to the Civil Hospital, Faridkot, for further recovery.

The GGSMCH is a level-3 care centre for Covid patients who need ventilator support in the ICU. On Friday, the total number of patients at the medical college was 404 against the availability of total 448 beds.

The total death toll in the medical college on Friday was 21 which included 18 confirmed Covid-19 cases. The college is receiving patients from all across the state and most of these patients are referred cases in critical condition.

The decision to shift the patients to the Civil Hospital is aimed at easing the patient load at the medical college so that new critical patients could be provided treatment, said Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences.

“We have started preparations for shifting 30 patients from the medical college to the Civil Hospital for post-Covid recovery. While these patients have recovered from critical condition, they still require oxygen support for further recovery,” said Dr Sanjay Kapoor, Civil Surgeon, Faridkot.
