New Delhi January 17

The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on Wednesday asked the Punjab Government to submit a report in case of a murder of a man on the suspicion of sacrilege at a gurdwara in Phagwara.

In a letter to Punjab’s Chief Secretary Anurag Verma, NCM Chairperson Iqbal Singh Lalpura said, “It has come to the notice of the National Commission for Minorities that one person, who tried to do sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Gurudwara Chhevin Patshahi, Chaura Khooh, Phagwara, was murdered inside the gurdwara by one Raman Deep Singh alias Mangu Matth.”

“It has been further learnt that this man was originally rounded up by the sevadar of the gurdwara and was in their custody for three hours. The police was informed. However, they did not take an immediate action. After three hours, the accused was killed inside the gurdwara which may be another sacrilege of the holy place. The interrogation of the suspect may have given the information about motive or any such conspiracy to commit sacrilege of Holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji,” he said in the letter.

A detailed report in this respect has been demanded by the commission by January 25.

A Nihang, Ramandeep Singh, allegedly murdered a youngster at Gurdwara Chaura Khooh in Phagwara early on January 16 on the suspicion that he had committed a sacrilege.

‘Another sacrilege’

In a letter to Chief Secretary Anurag Verma, National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Chairperson Iqbal Singh Lalpura said, “The youth was rounded up by a sevadar of the gurdwara and was later killed, which may be considered another act of sacrilege at the holy place.
