Moga cop shoots wife, three of in-laws’ family, surrenders

A head constable with the Moga police allegedly shot dead his wife and three other members of his in-laws family with his service rifle at Said Jalalpur village in Dharamkot sub-division of district on Sunday. He later surrendered before the police.

The deceased have been identified as wife Rajwinder Kaur (45), brother-in-law Jaskaran Singh (40), sister-in-law Inderjit Kaur (32) and mother-in-law Sukhwinder Kaur (65), the police said.

Kulwinder Singh was posted in the Police Lines, here. Part of the anti-riot squad, he was heading the tear gas unit. After committing the crime, Kulwinder Singh surrendered before the local police. His service rifle, AK-47, was also recovered from him.

Although the exact provocation behind the crime is not known, preliminary investigation has revealed that Kulwinder Singh had a property dispute with his in-laws.

He along with his wife visited the in-laws house yesterday. He consumed liquor there and entered into a heated argument with the in-laws over a piece of land on which he had opened a pig farm. His brother-in-law asked him to vacate the land. However, he expressed his inability to vacate the plot. The in-laws complained to the local police against Kulwinder Singh last night but they allegedly did not take any action against him.

Around 7 am, Kulwinder Singh fired shots from his service rifle at the in-laws present in the house.

The police sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. SP (Investigation) Harinder Pal Singh said a case under Section 302 of the IPC and relevant sections of the Arms Act has been registered against Kulwinder Singh.
