Gurdhian Singh, 60, a native of Durali village in Mohali, drove his SUV into Bhakra canal on Chandigarh Road in Ropar on Saturday.

Gurdhian was the husband of Mohali Zila Parishad chairperson Jaswinder Kaur. The couple have four children--two daughters, a pilot and a doctor, and two sons, one of whom is an engineer. Currently residing in Mohali, Gurdhian had a business of setting up mobile phone towers and gensets on high rise buildings. He had employed around 300 workers and had contracts all over Punjab.

In the Mohali political circle, Gurdhian was considered as a close confidant of former health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu. The Congress leader alleged that Gurdhian Singh was being harassed by the AAP government for the past one month. A case was registered against him at the Sohana police station in Mohali, which the Congressmen termed as an act of political vendetta. A cross FIR was also registered in the case.

Balbir Singh Sidhu said, "In the last 50 days, four sarpanches have been booked on one pretext or the other. The AAP government is misusing the police force to harass our workers. Gurdhian Singh was a social worker who focused on the development of his village. Police were being pressurized to arrest him. He was called to police station a few days ago and harassed. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann had assured that no vendetta politics would take place in state but it is happening on daily basis."
