Muktsar, April 19

Irate over unabated wheat thefts at the local grain market, a group of farmers today closed the gate of the market committee office and lodged a protest. Some employees even had to wait outside for an hour.

The farmers said four women and two kids were found stealing wheat from the grain market and were handed over to the police about 5 am today. Later, they gathered outside the market committee office about 10 am to lodge a protest in this regard.

Farmers Ranjit Singh and Pippal Singh said: “Some weighing scales are installed illegally at the grain market and thieves sell stolen wheat there. However, the market committee officials are doing nothing to stop this practice.”

Later, on Muktsar Market Committee secretary Balkar Singh’s assurance that all such weighing scales would be removed, the protesting farmers dispersed.
