Ropar, February 29

Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday claimed that he received a text message demanding Rs 2 crore ransom from an unidentified number last week.

The sender claimed to be from Goldy Brar gang and threatened to do what they did with Sidhu Moosewala, alleged Channi.

Channi said he had informed Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav in this regard and the police was yet to revert to him about it.

The Congress leader said that a councillor from Morinda had also received a call demanding Rs 50 lakh in ransom. The family was in a state of shock and had already gone underground, he added.

Channi alleged that the unidentified person also claimed that his gang members were roaming near his Morinda residence and can kill him anytime.

Interestingly, in one of the messages, the person also promised to refund the ransom money and help him in the forthcoming elections.

Ropar SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana said they got to know about the incident through social media and further investigation has been initiated in the matter.
