Gurdaspur, February 10

The Vigilance Bureau today arrested a doctor working at Civil Hospital after he was caught red-handed taking a bribe to change a medico-legal report (MLR).

The development sent shock waves through the medical fraternity even as a word spread that more doctors could be under the lens.

The sleuths took Dr Manjit Singh Babbar into custody when he was being given Rs 20,000 by complainant Amrik Singh.

The complainant had approached the VB claiming that the doctor was asking for illegal gratification for changing the contents of the MLR.

“Amrik Singh told us that he had approached the Civil Hospital authorities to re-investigate an earlier MLR registered against some of his colleagues under which Section 326 (voluntary causing injuries by using sharp-edged weapons), IPC, had been slapped against them. Babbar, who was heading a board of doctors, sought a bribe to settle matters by expunging that particular section from the fresh MLR which was to be prepared by him. “Subsequently, Amrik Singh approached our men following which we laid a trap and arrested the doctor with the tainted notes,” said a vigilance official.
