Chandigarh, November 17

Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh today directed the Chief Secretary and DGP to ensure speedy probe against those responsible for mercilessly thrashing Dalit youth Jagmale Singh, resulting in his death at the PGI here on Saturday. The victim belonged to Changaliwala village in Sangrur.

Patiala Zone IGP Jatinder Singh Aulakh has reportedly directed Sangrur SSP Sandeep Garg to file a chargesheet in the case within a week. Urging the victim’s kin to call off their protest, the CM said the government would ensure that justice was done and the family was rehabilitated. “The government is committed to protecting the Dalits and will not tolerate atrocities against them,” he said. The accused have been charged under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The grieving family is yet to give consent to post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, various organisations continue to protest at Changaliwala village on the Sunam-Jakhal road. Leaders of various parties have decided to back the protest.

Punjab Warehousing Corporation chief Raj Kumar Verka met protesters in Changaliwala on Sunday. Verka said he would send a report to the CM. — TNS
