Jalandhar, February 2

The key suspect in the SUV crash that occurred on the night of January 30 here has been arrested by the Jalandhar police. Identified as Gurpreet Singh of Batala, he is a Punjab Police employee, who was under training as a constable at PAP Jalandhar.

The car that he was driving on the ill-fated night had hit an e-rickshaw near Vidhipur Crossing on Jalandhar-Amritsar highway, killing four people — two on the spot and two others during treatment.

The e-rickshaw had five occupants and the only survivor of the mishap is under treatment at the Jalandhar Civil Hospital. An FIR had been registered at the Maqsudan police station against the car driver under Sections 304, 338, 427 and 279 of the IPC on January 31.

While the police had carried out intensive raids at various districts, including Batala, Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, etc., in search of the driver, he was arrested last night from Jalandhar district.

Gurpreet was appointed as constable in Punjab Police after his father’s death in February last year. His father was an ASI and Gurpreet had got a job in his place.

As per Gurpreet’s statement to the police, on the night of the accident, the e-rickshaw did not have any lights on, due to which he could not see it in the dark. Karatarpur DSP Palwinder Singh said: “The suspect was arrested last night and was presented in court today after which he has been sent to judicial custody at the Kapurthala jail.”
