New Delhi, February 13

A law guaranteeing minimum support price (MSP) for crops will be enacted if the INDIA bloc comes to power at the Centre after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Tuesday.

The proclamation by Kharge comes at a time when farmers have thrown a challenge to the Narendra Modi-led BJP government by launching another round of protest. Legal guarantee of MSP is one of the primary demands of the protesting farmers who have launched a “Dilli Chalo” march to press their demand.

“We guarantee buying of various crops at MSP if our government comes to power. We will make a law on this. This was party’s ‘first guarantee’ ahead of the 2024 polls,” Kharge said at a party rally in Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur.

The Congress president joined party MP Rahul Gandhi who was in Chhattisgarh, leading his Manipur Maharashtra “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” programme.

Rahul said the BJP government gave Bharat Ratna to MS Swaminathan, but they were not ready to do what the famous agricultural scientist had recommended. “In his report, the Swaminathan committee has clearly said farmers should get legal rights for MSP. The BJP government is not doing that.”

“The INDIA bloc will come to power and we will give guarantees of MSP to farmers then. We will fulfil the recommendations made by Swaminathan,” he said.

Kharge said, “In Delhi, barricades with sharp nails on top have been put up to stop the farmers. If one fights for his rights, he faces baton charge by the police. What kind of democracy is this? Modi doesn’t like farmers.”

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi wrote on X, “Fair price for crops is the right of farmers. They deserve a respectable income...”
