Child falls into underground irrigation pipeline in Sultanpur Lodhi, rescued

A two-year-old boy had a narrow escape after he fell into an underground irrigation pipeline at Kabirpur village in Sultanpur Lodhi here on Saturday.

Rajvir had been left by his mother to take bath in a small tank when he slipped into the pipeline and got trapped. The mother, a migrant farm labourer, raised the alarm and soon villagers gathered at the site.

Rashpal Singh, a villager, said they used mobile flashlights to spot the child and found him at a depth of 15-20 feet. They switched off the connecting motor and started digging along the cemented pipe. They breached the wall at the requisite depth and rescued the child, where he remained stuck for nearly an hour.

Child’s father Krishna took him to a hospital, from where he was referred to the Civil Hospital in Sultanpur Lodhi.

SI Lakhwinder Singh of Kabirpur police station said the child was safe and was with parents. “The site was not a borewell. It was an opening of a pipeline connected a tank for irrigation purposes. Timely intervention by villagers helped save the child,” he added.
