Dera Baba Nanak, July 3

Dera Baba Nanak township, which shot into the limelight after becoming the starting point of the 4.5-km Kartarpur corridor, was declared a containment zone after 20 Covid-19 cases were reported in the past 72 hours.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ishfaq said no movement would be allowed in the zone till further orders. “The situation will be reviewed on a day-to-day basis. Things were getting out of control after 20 persons tested positive. The number of cases actually increased after an asymptomatic youth tried his hand at the game of cricket with his friends. As many as nine cases were reported today itself,” he said.

Cabinet Minister and local MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa made a passionate appeal to the people to “stay indoors and refrain from indulging in violations for the sake of their loved ones”.

An official said it was probably for the first time in Punjab that an entire township was declared a containment area. Recently, Gidderbaha town had also been declared a containment zone.
