Bathinda, June 23

Scores of farmers under the banner of the Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) staged a protest outside the District Administrative Complex, demanding cancellation of a case registered against a farmer under the Mining Act in Bathinda on Thursday.

Farmers drove scores of earth movers and tractors and raised slogans against the administration. The protetsing farmers blocked Bathinda-Mansa Road, thereby causing inconvenience to commuters.

Kulwant Sharma, chief (Sangat block), BKU (Ekta Ugrahan), said, “A false case has been registered against a farmer for lifting soil from his fields to level it. We do not have to take permission from anyone for working in our fields.”

“He has been booked under the Mining Act. We demand that case against the farmer must be cancelled or we will be forced to intensify our stir. We have submitted a memorandum to senior officials in this regard,” said Sharma.
