Armed men gun down Akali leader in Majitha village in Amritsar

Armed men gunned down Akali leader Gurdeep Singh at Umarpura village under Majitha police station here on Wednesday night.

His wife is sarpanch of the village. Singh was returning from the village gurdwara when the incident took place and died on the spot. He was considered close to former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

Senior police officials, including SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal, SP (D) Amandeep Kaur and DSP Arun Sharma, rushed to the spot.

The police suspect the hand of gangsters.

Following the statement by Charanjit Kaur, sister-in-law of the deceased, the police booked gangster Harmanjit Singh and his father Nirmal Singh besides three unidentified people.

According to police, when Gurdeep was returning home from the gurdwara at around 9 pm, the armed men sprayed bullets on him.

He suffered five gunshot wounds. The body was sent for post-mortem.
