Dr Anupa lost both her legs trying to rescue highway pile-up victims

ADGP (Traffic) Sharad Chauhan took note of the Tuesday’s vehicle pile-up near Bandala village on the Amritsar-Bathinda highway, about 19 km from here, in which a local woman doctor lost both her legs while trying to save the victims. Five other persons were also injured in the mishap.

Applauding Dr Anupa Gupta’s act of compassion and her valour, the ADGP said she was a force to reckon with. Dr Gupta is on a lift support system and is battling for life at a private hospital here.

In a social media post, Chauhan wrote: “As a doctor, her sense of social responsibility went ahead even of her own safety. Trying to save the victims in the Amritsar-Bathinda highway accident, Dr Anupa Gupta lost her both legs and is fighting for life. My heart goes out to Dr Gupta for the unfortunate condition she’s now into. I pray for strength to her family in this difficult-to-accept circumstances and her speedy recovery.”

Dr Anupa is the headof the anatomy department at Dashmesh Dental College, Faridkot.

The incident took place when she along with her colleagues was on their way to the college in a car. On the way, Dr Anupa spotted a road mishap involving a goods carrier and a tempo traveller. As per the police, the goods carrier was coming from the wrong side when it hit a tempo on a foggy Tuesday morning, leading to a pile-up.

Later, the doctors had to amputate Dr Anupa’s both legs to save her life.

The police have now registered a case against unknown truck driver on the charges of causing grievous hurt by an act which endangers human life on the statement of Dr Anupa’s colleague Dr Harkanwalpreet Singh.
