A joint meeting of Hindu organisations was held at Shri Hanuman Garhi on Sunday during which Tejaswi Bhardwaj, Ramesh Sachdeva, Sanju Chahal, Rajeev Chahal, Vipin Sharma, Micky Pandit and Kamal Saroch threatened to give a bandh call if suspects were not arrested by February 20.

Those booked have been identified as Tanish, alias Bhinda, Abhi, Anmol, Gagan and Mattu, all residents of Subhash Nagar, Phagwara, and their four unidentified accomplices on the charges of assaulting and seriously injuring Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Palta and vandalising a shop of another Youth Shiv Sena president Rahul Karwal at Khalwara Gate.

Vatsalya Gupta, SSP, Kapurthala, said the police had arrested the main suspect involved in the attack on Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Palta. The arrested suspect was identified as Tanish, alias Bhinda, a resident of Subhash Nagar, Phagwara. It was learnt that Tanish was the brother of Yashwant Bobby, who was killed in violent communal clashes, in Phagwara in the year 2018.

Roopinder Kaur Bhatti, Superintendent of the Police (SP), Phagwara, said today that ASI Ishru Parshad had been appointed investigating officer (IO) for the case. She said the police were working on different angles to solve the case. She said the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in localities near the crime spots were being scanned to find more clues about the suspects.

More than six miscreants attacked and wounded Shiv Sena Punjab vice-president Rajesh Palta with hockey sticks when he and other Shiv Sena activists, including Vipin Sharma, Jimmy Karwal and Vinay, were collecting donations for a shobha yatra of Maha Shivratri at Subhash Nagar Chowk on Saturday late evening.

The Phagwara SP said after a minor scuffle, miscreants attacked Palta when he and Shiv Sena activists went to BH Jewellers for collecting donation. Palta was admitted to the local Civil Hospital with multiple blunt injuries. SMO Dr Lehimber Ram said Palta’s condition was stable now.
