Jalandhar, January 17

At a city hospital, female patients walked the ramp after undergoing a weight-loss surgery.

“It is a common notion that due to excess weight, such people are not accepted for modelling but now bariatric surgery is making such activities and sports possible for them,” said Dr Jasmeet Singh Ahluwalia.

Baljinder Kaur, one of the participants, said she used to participate in plus-size modelling but now she was confident to take part in normal professional modelling soon.

She said she used to feel breathless even after walking but now she could walk long distance easily and feels more energetic. Some other patients said after surgery, their blood sugar level and blood pressure were under control and they were able to live their life freely.

City’s famous infertility specialist Mandeep Kaur said obesity was becoming a big factor for infertility. Pregnancy was also more risky in obese people and risk of complications was higher.

Jasmeet Ahluwalia, a bariatric surgeon, said the bariatric surgery was proving to be a boon for people struggling with obesity.

“Earlier, there was no reliable treatment for obesity but now with the help of such surgeries, millions of people across the world are being benefited. Even new health policies are covering bariatric surgery under them,” he said. — OC
