Living his childhood dream is Sikander Ghuman

A producer, actor and singer, Sikander Ghuman may be living in the UK but his heart lies in Punjab. He will soon be seen in 'Chal Mera Putt 3', the sequel of 'Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua' and also has 'Hun Ni Murde Yar' among his upcoming projects. It was as a participant in school theatre that Sikander realised he wanted to be an actor. The initial years may not have been easy for him but he kept strong. In this column he shares the love for acting and what makes the Punjabi in him proud.

What is the biggest strength of the Punjabi community?

The best thing about Punjab is our culture. Punjabis are kind-hearted people, no matter where in the world they live.

Punjab is rich in folk tradition. Is there a story/song that you love the most?

I love all the folk songs, since every folk song has a story connected to our culture. That's also a reason why there are so many soulful singers in Punjab, because we are exposed to such rich music right from our childhood.

Where do you find strength in tough times?

I am very close to my family, my wife and kids. It’s in them that I find strength.

How was it to grow up in Kapurthala?

I was born in Kapurthala. My growing up years weren’t easy. I lost my mother soon after my birth and it is my grandfather who raised me.

What is it like living in the UK? Share the things you did to stay connected to your roots?

I live in the UK but I am very close to my roots because of my upbringing. Praying, going to gurdwada regularly, listening to traditional songs, being associated with people from my community, I do it all.

How did you choose the profession of acting? 

It was my dream from schooldays. I used to participate in school functions, stage and drama, I was my best when I acted in school plays, so that’s from where it started.

What challenges did you face as an actor?

There are difficulties in every path we take in life. In my case it was about finding the right people in the industry, once that happened, there was support in this world of cinema for me.

What are you working on these days?

I am currently working on a film with Ammy Virk and and another one with Kulwinder Billa.

What kind of shows/movies do you like? Who do you wish to work with?

I love all sorts of Punjabi movies, especially the ones that highlight the culture and virsa of Punjab. I would like to work with Diljit Dosanjh.

What are the three things that you learnt from this lockdown?

You never know what is around the corner, so don’t take life for granted. Spending time with family is very important. And lastly, it is important to appreciate the things we have in life.

When you are stressed, which place do you visit in Punjab?

That will be my birthplace Kapurthala and the Golden Temple.

Which Punjabi film is close to your heart and why?

‘1984 Punjab’ is that film as it shows the reality of what Punjab went through.

Name the best place to eat authentic Punjabi food outside Punjab. 

I think, outside Punjab, it is Fort Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh.

One thing about Punjab and Punjabis that you like the most?

Punjab has a rich heritage, which is liked by everyone. Punjabis are fun-loving and hard-working people that’s why they make a place for themselves no matter which part of the world they live in.
