After registering cases against family members of gangsters and criminal elements for harbouring them, now the police had tighten the noose around those who had given surety bonds for the gangsters while applying bails in different criminal cases registered against them.

Talking to The Tribune, SSP, Amritsar Rural, Vikram Jeet Duggal said the police were leaving no stone unturned to nab the culprits who had been evading arrest since the brutal murder of former Akali Sarpanch Gurdeep Singh at Umarpura village on January 1.

Gudeep Singh was returning home from the village gurdwara when armed assailants opened fired on him. The police had booked seven persons, including gangsters, for the murder. Only one person Manbir Singh, son of an ASI, was nabbed by the police in this connection.

The police had booked Harmanjit Singh associated with the Batala-based Pavitar gang (linked with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria currently lodged in jail) and his father Nirmal Singh, brother Harpreet Singh, besides Inderbir Singh alias Buri, Harwinder Singh Sandhu, Manbir Singh, and Mehakpreet Singh in the case.

“We have prepared a list of the persons who fulfilled surety bonds for the gangsters involved in the case. The police would also arrest them and all of them had escaped from their houses,” said SSP.

Earlier, the police had booked family members of Harmanjit Singh and Harwinder Singh for Harbouring them. The police arrested another person, Lovepreet, Singh on Tuesday under similar offence. The police recovered a country-made weapon from his possession.
