Teachers’ groups roll out manifestos

As Punjabi University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) elections near, groups came out with their manifestos to woo voters. With the final list of candidates released today, the university will hold the elections on October 1.

A total of 564 teachers will be able to cast their vote.

Progressive Teachers’ Alliance (PTA) has fielded Dr Nishan Singh Deol, Head, Department of Physical Education, for the post of president and Dr Maninder Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, for the post of vice-president.

Prof Nishan Singh Deol said they were focusing on improving financial health of the university.

The Teachers’ United Front is focussing on the implementation of the UGC’s seventh pay commission scales and releasing pending DA instalments. TUF alliance convener Dr Kesar Singh Bhangoo said the group wants to work for financial stability and autonomy of the university. The group has fielded Dr Varinder Kumar Kaushik for the post of president and Dr Gurjit Singh Bhathal for the post of the vice-president. — TNS
