Patiala, July 26

Thirty per cent students of Classes X to XII reportedly attended classes on the first day of reopening of government schools in the district after a long shutdown. Schools were closed owing to the second Covid wave.

The District Education Officer (DEO), Harinder Kaur, said 30 per cent students attended schools on the first day. She hoped that the attendance would improve in the coming days.

"The attendance will definitely improve in the coming days. I think majority of students will attend schools in a week or so. We are taking all possible precautions for the safety of students," the DEO added.

"All teachers, who are coming to schools, have already received at least one dose of Covid vaccine. Many teachers are fully vaccinated. Besides, Covid appropriate behaviour is followed by both students and teachers," the DEO said.

The District Education Department said students' samples would be collected in schools at random for Covid test.

"Physical classes will be free from hurdles of online classes such as frequent network problems," said Sharandeep Singh Cheema, a student.

Meanwhile, various teachers' organisations welcomed government's decision to reopen schools. Teachers' organisations said they want the government to reopen schools for remaining classes also.
