Rajindra Hospital gets 26 specialist doctors

Despite massive manpower, 26 doctors (specialists) from across Punjab have been assigned duty at the isolation ward of Government Rajindra Hospital. The specialist doctors are said to be from the anaesthesia, paediatrics and medicine departments.

The appointments have not gone down well with many civil surgeons in the state, who said it would adversely affect work at original place of posting.

The appointments have been done for one month by the Director, Health and Family Welfare. It has been learned that the appointment of specialist doctors have been made to support the existing staff of Government Rajindra Hospital. Sources said some of the specialist doctors at Rajindra Hospital, who were performing duty at the isolation ward, had tested positive for Covid. Therefore, the hospital had shortage of consultants.

There are 85 specialists, 100 senior residents (SR) and 160 junior resident (JR) doctors, who have been performing duty at the Covid ward.

Dr Avneet Kaur, Director, Health and Family Welfare Department, said the purpose to appoint specialist doctors was to provide support to the Rajindra doctors. She said, “Many specialist doctors have tested positive, while some were already quarantined. The idea was to give support to the specialists.”
