Patiala, January 24

Punjabi University’s pensioners have been waiting for benefits for the month of December till date. Due to inordinate delay, pensioners have approached Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh. Benefits are usually released by the university along with salary of regular staff.

“Most officials occupying non-teaching posts in the varsity are professors, who have released salary of regular employees,” said Sham Singh, president, Punjabi University Retired Officers’ Welfare Association.

He said pension was five times less than salary paid to regular employees in December 2019.

Pensioners urged the state government to provide financial help to the university so that their benefits could be released.

Prof BS Ghuman, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, said he has received a letter from the CM office.

He said, “I have met the Higher Education Minister. We have also presented our proposal to bail out the university with a help of a special grant. Releasing pension is also a part of it. The minister’s response was positive.”
