Patiala, September 11

Residents will now have to segregate waste before door-to-door collection by the MC staff else they will have to pay a fine.

Officials in the MC said the process of collecting fines would start in a week. They would identify residents who failed to segregate waste before giving it to collectors, officials added.

The MC has been running the waste collection project though a private company.

Aman Sekhon, programme coordinator, Community Development Abhiyan, MC, said: “Garbage will not be dumped at the dumping ground or in smart semi-underground bins as earlier. Waste collectors have been directed to carry garbage to MRF centres where it will be used for preparing compost and processed as per the solid-waste management guidelines.”

“Smart semi-underground bins will also be used as segregation points. We are expecting to collect 100 per cent segregated waste in a couple of months,” he added.

“The MC has established waste collection. Six MRF centres and compost pits at 11 locations will be utilised for the segregation of garbage,” he said.

“People, who do not give garbage to waste collector, will also be identified. We will keep a check on residents to prevent them from throwing garbage at nearby plots or empty spaces,” he added.

“The city has 350 waste collectors. If they fail to collect garbage in a segregated manner, penalty will be levied on them,” officials said.
