Patiala district sees Covid death after three months, 26 new cases

The district continues to witness a rise in Covid cases. After a long time, Patiala on Wednesday, reported as many as 26 positive cases. Around 150 Covid cases have been reported over the past seven days.

Of 26 fresh cases, 16 were reported from Patiala city alone. Kallon Majra block reported three cases, while Nabha, Dudhan Sadhan and Harpalpur reported two cases each. Rajpura town reported one case. With fresh cases, the tally of active cases in the district rose to 92. The district reported a Covid death today after a gap of three months.

Officials of the Health Department said a 73-year-old Patiala resident, suffering from heart ailment, died of Covid. Health Department said the deceased had comorbidities. With this, Covid death count in the district rose to 1,458 since the Covid outbreak in 2020.

It has been learnt that a new sub-lineage of Omicron variant was responsible for the rise in the Covid cases. However, health officials are refraining to comment over this.

Dr Sumeet Singh, District Epidemiologist, said people should start following Covid appropriate behaviour since the cases had started to rise in the district. He said, “So far, there is no clustering of Covid cases, however, there is considerable rise in cases.”

Meanwhile, the Health Department, despite rising Covid cases, has failed to ramp up testing in the district. Health Department today collected only 383 Covid samples in the district.
