MBBS interns seek increase in stipend

Miffed over low stipend, MBBS interns of Government Medical College held a protest march at Government Rajindra Hospital today.

The protesters raised slogans against the state government for not hiking the stipend for more than a decade. Despite working for long hours, the disgruntled MBBS interns, today, demanded their stipend to be on the line of equal work, equal pay.

The protesters held a signature campaign as a mark of protest. Each medical student, whether pursuing MBBS, Homoeopathy or Ayurveda, has to go through an internship.

Interns alleged that there was a huge discrepancy in the amount, being paid throughout the country. Therefore, their monthly stipend should be increased from Rs 9,000 to, Rs 17,900 as recommended by the Ministry of Family Health and Welfare. — TNS
