Through a research at the Department of Computer Science, Punjabi University a system has been developed whereby appropriate sentences will be displayed as suggestions while typing in Gurmukhi script on Internet. Through this, users would be able to find different types of sentences suitable for the expression of their respective topic. The research was done by Gurjot Singh Mahi under the supervision of Dr Amandeep Verma.

The research paper also received the honour of “Best Research Paper” during the International Conference on “New Emerging Trends in Engineering” held in Kozhikode, Kerala. When any user starts writing a sentence on the computer under this system, it will suggest the complete possible sentence suitable to the relevant topic of that user, by clicking on which he will be able to get the complete sentence immediately.

Dr Amandeep Verma said there had been a lot of work in the field of English language for such suggestions of possible sentences, but only a limited work had been done in this regard in local dialects. For this purpose, work has been done with reference to Gurmukhi script in this research.

Researcher Gurjot Singh Mahi said, “By finding and using the model of methods that give the best results, this software was named ‘PURAN’ which proved to be the most usable and accessible for the users. Vice-Chancellor Arvind said the point he often raised about making the Punjabi language up-to-date, was the appropriate way to do such research.
