Four fined for violating single-use plastic ban

Cracking down on those using single-use plastic, the Municipal Corporation has started issuing challans to the shopkeepers and other outlets for storing or selling the banned plastic items.

The MC workers, along with officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), will soon hold a drive against single-use plastic manufacturers as well. This is after a nationwide ban on single-use plastic comes into effect from July 1. Officials of the corporation said they carried out a drive in the city and issued challans to four business owners.

“Along with issuing challans, we have also confiscated 40 kg of single-use plastic material. The material will be destroyed at the PPCB office. We will also carry out a drive against manufacturers of single-use plastic items in the region. Residents and shopkeepers are advised not to use single-use plastic products, including ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packaging films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers”, MC Commissioner Aaditya Uppal said. The Municipal Commissioner said strict action would be taken against the violators using or selling single-use plastic.

MC Joint Commissioner Jivanjot Kaur said the aim of banning the single-use plastic was to provide a clean environment and added drives against the banned items would be carried out in the coming days as well. Corporation officials advised people to use bags made of cloth and jute.
