Curfew takes toll on waste collection

Show comments

Patiala, March 24

Due to the curfew in Patiala after the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the condition of already irregular door-to-door collection of household waste has gone from bad to worse in the city. Residents of areas, including New Lal Bagh, New Friends Colony, areas adjoining Bhupindra Road and Dharampura Bazaar among others complained about irregular services while the MC officials said the services were affected due to curfew and they will now provide duty passes to the workers. The services also remained affected outside the MC limits, including at Professor Colony.

Proper garbage collection was reported from areas, including residential areas on the Passey Road, Leela Bhawan area, Manshahiya Colony near the railway crossing 21 among others.

“The Municipal Corporation’s workers tasked with collection of household waste have not come here. Waste is piling up outside the house becoming a breeding ground for flies and mosquitoes,” a resident of New Lal Bagh said.

According to a resident of Model Town near Bhupindra road, the service has remained irregular. “They come one day and then remain absent for the next 3-4 days on a stretch. The MC needs to spruce-up its efforts to collect the garbage.”

The residents said the service remained optimum in residential areas near Leela Bhawan and Green View Colony. “Though the service providers are not from the company that the MC has given the charge to, the sanitation workers come at least every alternate day”, said Parminder, a resident of Green View colony. — TNS
