Patiala, January 20

The annual heritage festival — a brainchild of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh — will kick-start on February 23. He will inaugurate the week-long event at Quila Mubarak here.

The festival was discontinued when the Akalis came to power in 2007, but was back after 12 years after the Congress took reins of the state.

The festival aims at raising funds for the restoration of Quila Mubarak, the historic fort of the Phulkian dynasty, and putting Patiala on the country’s tourist map.

Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit said, “A crafts mela at Sheesh Mahal will be organised from February 22 to March 5.” Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Preeti Yadav will be the nodal officer for the event.

Other than the stalls at the craft mela, Jang-e-Saragarhi, a light-and-sound show will be held at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports.

The festival will feature top names in classical music and dance. “We are yet to finalise the list of artistes. Hopefully, there will be a good combination of classical and modern singing,” the DC said.
