At a meeting with officials of the administration and a number of departments, Justice Jasbir Singh (retd), chairman, monitoring committee set-up by National Green Tribunal (NGT), today gave strict directions for implementation of rules of the NGT for management of solid waste in the city.
He said the special task force and municipal bodies should start management of the waste as the NGT will soon start levying fine and deciding responsibility.
He said the timeline set by the NGT to manage the solid waste had already passed, therefore, the offices should ensure management of the waste as the tribunal will start fixing responsibilities and impose fine.
He said the executive officers need to work on the ground to ensure proper management of the solid waste. “The NGT teams will visit and check the progress in all areas on its own,” he said adding that it was a collective responsibility not to throw waste in the open.
He said the dumping yards should be walled and green belts should be maintained in their surroundings.
He also discussed ways of management of bio-medical waste generated at health centres and other waste generated at poultry farms and directed officials to conduct drives at various hospitals in the district.
He said the offices concerned are required to maintain a record of management of plastic waste and ensure segregation wet and dry waste from households.
