Shimla, January 12

The elections of the state BJP chief are expected to be held on January 16 and 17. The high command has reportedly told the state leaders to find a leader who is capable of steering the party to victory in the 2022 Assembly elections.

Trilok Jamwal, political advisor to chief minister and considered close to JP Nadda, former minister, Randhir Sharma, party general secretary and chief spokesperson Kripal Parmar and party general secretary Ram Singh are the frontrunners for the post.

Incumbent BJP president Satpal Singh Satti, who assumed the charge in February 2012, replacing Khimi Ram, was given second term which expired in 2019. He has been asked to continue till the election of new BJP chief. Since there is no provision in the party constitution for giving another term to Satti, the race for new party chief has hot up and a large number of young brigade of leaders are eyeing the top post.

The party with three power centres revolving around former Chief Minister P K Dhumal, former Union Minister J P Nadda and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, is looking for energetic face with capacity to carry everyone along as 2022 Assembly polls would be fought under his leadership.

J P Nadda is the national working president of BJP and his loyalists are also eyeing the post. The induction of Anurag Thakur as minister of state in Union ministry has signaled emergence of new leadership in the Kangra- Hamirpur belt and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur is, of course, the major power centre.

Balancing different groups would be a challenging task but party insiders say that “days of lobbying for posts are gone and the will of the high command would prevail”.

The new BJP state president would be elected in this week, said state BJP chief Satpal Singh Satti.

The presidents of 73 mandals of the BJP and 17 organisational districts have already been elected.
